Canine Parainfluenza

CANINE PARAINFLUENZA-

Canine parainfluenza is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus, which produces a mild respiratory tract infection.  It is often associated with other respiratory tract infections such as canine adenovirus-2, and a bacteria called bordetella bronchiseptica.  These 3 organisms comprise what is commonly known of as kennel cough. Canine parainfluenza is an important component of kennel cough. It replicates mainly in the nose, pharynx and bronchi, and usually does not progress to the lungs.  The virus works to “paralyze” the mechanism that helps to clear mucous from the respiratory tract and allows bacteria to descend.

Symptoms

Infected animals usually have a dry unproductive cough and sound as if they are trying to “hack” up something from their lungs.

Diagnosis

A presumptive diagnosis is usually based on clinical signs and a history of close contact to other dogs.

Treatment

Treatment usually involves calming the cough with an antitussive such as Robitussin DM. If there are copious nasal secretions or harsh lung sounds are heard on auscultation, your vet may prescribe oral antibiotics and/or recommend nebulization.  (See Kennel Cough)

Prevention

It is important that all puppy vaccines are given and boosters are given as prescribed by your vet.  Remember that vaccines are not 100% effective against any disease.
